If you have finally decided to take a social dance class, we, first of all, want to say how excited we are for you. Social dance classes are not only a great way to learn a new skill, but they also are an awesome opportunity to meet new people. On the other hand, many people feel a little intimidated before they attend their first social dance class for a number of reasons. One of the reasons people feel self-conscious has to do with a lack of knowledge surrounding what sort of clothing they should wear when they attend a social dance class. In this post, we are going to give you a better idea of what sort of attire is appropriate for your first social dance class.
Wear Something You Can Move In
Even if you love your favorite pair of skinny jeans or mini skirt, a social dance class is not the time to wear them. In pants that are too tight, you won’t be able to make the strides you need to on the dance floor and in a short skirt, you will likely be too busy pulling it down every two minutes to even really focus on the dancing you are supposed to be doing. With that said, wear pants that are easy for you to move in and which are an appropriate length so they do not drag on the floor as you dance. Additionally, if you wear a skirt or dress, you might want to wear some sort of short beneath them in case your skirt flares out when you are turning.
If you are a man, we would suggest just wearing a polo or button-down shirt with some khaki pants.
Wear Something You Are Comfortable In
Stepping into the studio for the first time can be a little scary for anyone. This is why it is important that you are as comfortable as possible when it comes to your clothing. Wearing something that you feel good in will help you to have confidence when you begin your first class. So don’t put too much thought into whether or not you are going to be dressed like everyone else in the class, and instead focus solely on what you will feel good dancing in.
Consider Wearing Layers
Dance studios are known for being kept at lower temperatures so we always recommend that those who come to our studio wear layers. While you might need them when you first arrive for your class, you likely will be shedding the layers once your body gets moving. Either way, you will be able to be comfortable as you dance since you will have the ability to add or remove clothing at any time.
Wear Something That Helps You To Feel Confident
As you begin to dance, you are going to become extremely familiar with focusing on your posture and your upper body. Wear something that will remind you to show off your form. Baggy sweatpants aren’t going to make you feel like a radiant dancer, so skip those and choose another outfit.
Remember, you will be meeting plenty of new people when in your social dance classes and first impressions are important. Wear something you want to be wearing when you are introducing yourself to a new friend or a potential romantic interest. Just in case! After all, you never know what will happen.
