In the world of the showbiz, you have to work your way to the top. That’s just a fact, and while fame can seemingly occur just about overnight, some of the most well-known names in the world flew under the radar for quite some time. At the end of the day — or at the end of our career, rather — we all have to start somewhere, right?

Take An Adult Dance Class In Woodbridge With Us. Maybe You’ll Get Famous!

At Modern Ballroom Dance Studio, we don’t tend to teach celebrities how to dance, but there’s no telling that one of our adult dance class participants could very well go onto total stardom and we’d be none the wiser. We also can’t promise that joining in on one of our adult dance classes in Woodbridge is going to make you famous, but what we can do is provide some interesting content below!

Some of these celebrities names may surprise you, and others may be unfamiliar to you. Let’s look at some of these famous individuals that were once mere backup dancers for other pop stars (it’s funny how celebrities tend to breed other celebrities, right?).

Mariah Carey

Though Mariah can easily be considered the female counterpart to holiday singer Michael Buble, she’s done so much more than sing holiday tunes. As a singer, songwriter, record producer, and even an occasional actress, Mariah Carey actually blew up from being a backup singer and dancer for Brenda Starr. Starr’s heyday was back in the late 1980s, so this set the stage for Carey to really hit the spotlight in the 90s.

Kevin Federline

You may be scratching your head thinking, “I recognize that name, but who is this guy, again?” Though Kevin Federline is an American rapper, DJ, actor, television personality, fashion model, and even a professional wrestler (though wrestling purists may contend that point), he’s best known as “Mr. Britney Spears.”

Before Kevin Federline was married to who was then the world’s biggest pop star, he worked as a backup dancer for the likes of Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, and Gwen Stefani.

Madonna

We hardly need to explain who Madonna is, but even this pop queen didn’t get her foot through the entertainment door without some help from Patrick Hernandez. This French singer is primarily famous for the worldwide hit single “Born to Be Alive,” and we’re sure that you feel quite alive when you’re partially responsible for helping Madonna blow up.

Tupac Shakur

Rest in peace, one of hip hop’s all-time greatest rappers, lyricists, and all-around poets. It’s a damned shame that some of the world’s greatest talent go out at such a young age (RIP Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones), but their musical influence will forever live on.

What many people don’t know about Tupac is that he was a backup dancer for the 1990s hip-hop group Digital Underground. That’s a random fact worth throwing around at your next get-together!

Jennifer Lopez

We’d like to think that J-Lo started out as uber-famous, but again, everyone must start somewhere. Well, performing as a backup dancer for New Kids on the Block meant that was only going to go up from there. She worked with the group in 1991, and went on to become a Fly Girl dancer on “In Living Color,” a popular early 90s sketch comedy series pioneered with the help of Jim Carrey (ahem, not to be confused with Mariah).

Michael K. Williams

This is where we get a little meta: Michael K. Williams worked his way into the entertainment world as a backup dancer for both Madonna and Tupac Shakur — two individuals that we just covered above. If you’ve seen The Wire, then you’ll recognize Michael K. Williams and his distinctive face.
